Chapter

“Mason?” I opened my eyes to darkness.

“No, ma’am.”

The room adjusted around me. Not true darkness, then. Only a shaded window and a foggy head masking daylight.

And not Mason, who would be—what? Stone for the hours until dusk? Dead? How did gargoyle magic work?

Even if my brain wasn’t clouded by pain and drugs, I didn’t have the information I needed. Once I was better, I would have to remedy that.

“Who are you?” My words were thick. My tongue felt dry and swollen.

The man in the chair beside my bed held a cup of water with a straw to my lips and I drank. It hurt. The smell hit me now. Hospital. I was recovering in a hospital from…

Images came back to me. A river. Rock troll. Satyrs. Mason. A kiss.

“My name is Dutch,” the man said. “I turned my head and painful lights exploded in front of my eyes.

“Rest easy,” he said.

“Who…”

“I work for Mr. Mason. I am his daytime eyes, you might say. He wanted to be sure that you were taken care of after your…encounter.”

“How long?”

“You’ve been in hospital for two days.”

Two days? I healed fast thanks to my Aesir blood. Never before had I been unconscious for two days. I should probably be dead.

Dutch shifted in the chair. “Now you’re awake, I should get the doctor.”

“Wait.” I reached for him. My arm was connected to wires and a clamp on one finger sent pulses to a nearby machine. “Mason. Is he okay?”

Dutch smiled

“Gargoyles are hard to kill, ma’am. He’s more worried about you. Do you have family to take care of you when you’re released?”

“Yes.” Gita, my roommate and live-in nanny, would enjoy fussing over me.

Dutch nodded. “Good. Mr. Mason says that should you need anything, you need only call.”

So he wouldn’t come. Well, what had I expected? I could call. No reason to leave it all up to him. But did I want to? Could I get involved with another immortal with all the baggage they came with? The centuries of guilt, angst and ennui that built up in their souls, begging for release?

“My sword.” I tried to rise. Paramedics had brought me here, but I couldn’t remember if they’d retrieved my sword.

“Your weapon is safe,” Dutch said. “Mr. Mason had me retrieve it and deliver it to your home. Your roommate took possession of it.”

Dutch was smooth. He didn’t even pause over the fact that my roommate was a banshee.

“Thank you.” I lay back in the bed, now recognizing the uneasy feeling in my blood. My sword was too far away. The separation grated on my magic.

But the effort to stay awake was too much. I was asleep before Dutch reached the door.
